OUR WORK

our STRATEGIES

MHFA eliminates barriers to housing faced by marginalized communities. We do this through research, coalition-building, advocacy, piloting innovative approaches, and community engagement.

Miami-Dade has just faced a severe economic shock of 20-100% increases in rent and home prices year over year, along with 20-30% increases in property insurance for homeowners. This affects almost every resident and contributes to affordable housing shortages at practically all income levels.

It is also true that the greatest need for the numbers of households affected and the greatest housing shortages lies with communities that have long been marginalized and are less likely to recover from these shocks. These marginalized communities include Black, Hispanic, and other people of color; people earning extremely low, low, and moderate incomes; people with disabilities; people with lived experience of homelessness; LGBTQ+ people; and immigrants. MHFA is dedicated to ensuring that marginalized communities are not left out of the systemic solutions to our housing shortage.

THE GREATER MIAMI HOUSING ALLIANCE

COALITION BUILDING AND ADVOCACY

GMHA is a coalition of public and private organizations taking action to address the affordable housing crisis. Born out of the 2020 Affordable Housing Framework, the alliance now has over 100 active members from across the county.

You can join the GMHA by filling out this form. For more information, please email Rayna Milfort at rayna@miamihomesforall.org.

PILOTING INNOVATIVE APPROACHES

Powered by JPMorgan Chase, the 3C Initiative was created to promote housing affordability and racial equity in five major US cities. Partnering with other organizations in Miami, we select development deals led by Black and Latin developers and property owners. Our work to take deals from concept to construction includes providing technical assistance, capital, education, and peer support from a development advisory council. We believe we will be able to prove concepts for new financing products and create a new cadre of BIPOC developers who can continue producing more affordable housing units.

THE 3C INITIATIVE

YOUTH VOICE ACTION COUNCIL

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND POWER BUILDING

Created to address the youth homelessness, the Youth Voice Action Council (YVAC) and HOMY (Helping our Miami-Dade Youth) run a hotline and system of service delivery.

The root causes of youth homelessness in Florida are the lack of affordable housing, family disputes, racial disparities in access to social services, and natural disasters like hurricanes. Youth homelessness jeopardizes young people’s health, education, and ability to prosper as adults. If you work with vulnerable youth under age 25, please join HOMY, and help us in ensuring the future of our youth and our city. Email Anjuli Castaño to participate in HOMY at anjuli@miamihomesforall.org.
